Sometimes bad things happen to beautiful people.When socialite party girl Mia Abbott-Renou wakes up in a garden she has little recall of the previous night -- except that she is naked...hurt...terrified. First off. Reading discretion is advised- solely based on the topic alone. However I do think people need to be more informed on this subject. Rape is never an easy topic to read, much less review.
Mia, is raped. She even knows who did it. However, because her dad is this big shot politician, she has to stay hush hush about it. I mean, heaven forbid your daughter ruins your political career. I mean, she didn't just get raped of her virginity on purpose.
Oh wait, she did- according to her father - I mean she did wear a dress at the party. I felt so bad for Mia. Neither one of her parents came to see her, she has to read a scripted account of what happened for a press release- which included an apology for being drunk(and under-aged) when it happened. REALLY? REALLY? Let's blame the victim.
I am so sick of society blaming the victim. Why would anyone ask to be raped and sexually violated? It is not the victims fault. They didn't ask for it based on the dress they decided to wear that night or that they decided to have a few drinks too many. Those aren't invitations! People show be allowed to wear something without the fear that its going to illicit unlawful attention.
And what are we teaching about the men (and women) in our world? That they can't control their dicks because they see some cleavage? Come on! Give them more credit than that. ( realize that is a generalized sentiment- however I think it gets my point across). An individual will be raped because some asshole is mentally fucked up and you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Society has given them a list of all these excuses that are deemed acceptable as to why they raped someone. " Oh, she bent over and her dress showed a bit to much thigh, I couldn't control my desires, she was kissing me before and seemed into it (even though she said no), she was drunk she wasn't in her right mindset. Come on! If I'm drunk you should be respectful and not take advantage of me. And really? Is it that enjoyable to you to have sex with someone who is passed out?
Another thing that Broken Beauty brought up is the widespread belief held by Mia's father. That you cannot get pregnant through rape. That your body will reject the sperm because it knows it wasn't consensual. Ummm.....I am sorry.What? Really? You think this is true? Her father is against the morning after pill and abortion. I am not going to get into the whole pro-life/pro-choice debate here, but I think a women (of any age) who gets pregnant due to rape should have the choice to carry out whatever her choice is (to keep the fetus or not).
There was a few posts on buzzfeed a while ago, where both male and female sexually assaulted victims wrote on card stock of the words the assailant said to them before they committed the crime. It's horrifying and heart breaking to read some of them, as a lot of them make it seem like the victims fault. How can we as a society even think of helping rape victims if we are constantly telling them its their fault?
